Potassium permanganate

Potassium permanganate is a caustic alkali with a purple color when dissolved in water. It will usually arrive in a powder or granular form. Be careful when handling this compound. Tiny amounts of dust will be distributed around the area and once wet, will result in a purple stain. Stains that you may get on your hands are brown in color and last quite a while. Potassium permanganate is hazardous to your eyes and so protective eyewear is recommended.

Potassium permanganate is indicated in all of the following conditions: Bacterial Gill Disease, Bacterial infections of the body and fins, Ciliated protozoan infestations except Ich, Flukes, and Fungus infections. Potassium permanganate will have no effect on crustacean parasites although it may decrease the survival of the immature forms of these pathogens. Ich will remain safe under the skin from the potassium permanganate and will not be cleared.

Advanced hobbyists commonly use potassium permanganate as a dip. I highly discourage this. There are many superb methods of surface disinfection in fish without a high dose potassium permanganate dip, which can and often does burn fins and gills.

It is important to discuss the behavior of potassium in water. “Active” potassium permanganate is purple when applied to the water. Potassium permanganate naturally dissociates into Manganese dioxide. This is brown in color. In many instances, it settles out or binds to “organics” on the sides of the tank and the fish. The water may remain amber for a while after treatment unless de-colorized. Amber water represents “Inactive” potassium permanganate.
